Platform Features Built for Canadian HIM Professionals

CoderCoach is purpose-built for Canadian HIM departments & programs - not a generic e-learning tool. Every feature is grounded in licensed CIHI classifications and Canadian Coding Standards, and designed around how Canadian coding departments actually work.

CoderCoach Competency Framework™

Your whole department. One view.

The Team Competency Dashboard maps every coder's performance across the CoderCoach Competency Framework™ - a structured set of dimensions covering the full scope of Inpatient and Outpatient coding practice. Colour-coded tiers make performance visible instantly: Expert, Proficient, Developing, or Needs Work.

  • Full department view - every coder, every dimension, one screen
  • Colour-coded tiers: Expert · Proficient · Developing · Needs Work
  • Coaching priority identified automatically based on team-level gaps
  • Filter to individual coders or view the full team aggregate
  • Drill into any coder for a detailed individual breakdown
Individual Education Plans (IEP)

Education plans that evolve with each coder

Each coder's Individual Education Plan is generated directly from their performance data - not a fixed curriculum. The plan surfaces priority focus areas, coaching recommendations, and peer-pairing suggestions based on what the data shows. As the coder's scores improve, the plan updates to reflect where they are now.

  • Generated from each coder's current performance profile, not a template
  • Updates automatically as scores and competency levels change
  • Coaching priorities and peer-pairing recommendations included
  • Team-level coaching plan available for managers alongside individual IEPs
  • Regenerate on demand - always reflects the current month's data

Behaviour-Driven Education (BDE)

Practice directed by performance and data

Behaviour-Driven Education means the platform directs coders to the case types that target their specific growth areas - not a generic catalogue they scroll through. Managers can also assign targeted case sets to reinforce identified growth areas across the team.

  • Thousands of Canadian clinical cases across all ICD-10-CA chapters and CCI sections
  • Difficulty graded from introductory to advanced
  • Cases mapped to the CoderCoach competency framework for purposeful practice
  • Managers assign targeted sets - gap-directed, not self-directed
  • Immediate feedback grounded in Canadian Coding Standards
Standards-Grounded Q&A

Coding guidance retrieved from the licensed source

CoderCoach's Q&A assistant answers ICD-10-CA and CCI coding questions by retrieving evidence directly from licensed CIHI content before responding. Every answer includes source citations - so coders can verify the guidance against the same standards they submit against.

  • Answers grounded in ICD-10-CA 2024 tabular list and index
  • CCI guidance including attribute rules (Status, Location, Extent)
  • Canadian Coding Standards 2022 directives and sequencing rules
  • DAD and NACRS database-specific guidance
  • Source citations with every answer - no unverifiable responses
  • Diagnosis typing, prefix rules, and diagnosis cluster guidance

Province-Aware Coder Profiles

Every province codes differently.
CoderCoach knows.

Coding roles vary by province — some coders cover both inpatient (DAD) and day surgery; others work exclusively in NACRS ambulatory or emergency settings. CoderCoach captures each coder's province and database type, then adapts their Knowledge Polygon, assessments, and education plan to match. Whether your department is DAD-only, NACRS-only, or both, the platform works the way your team works.

  • Coder profiles capture province and database type (DAD or NACRS)
  • Knowledge Polygon and assessments adapted to each coder's role
  • Works for DAD-only, NACRS-only, and mixed-role departments
  • Multi-province teams and college cohorts supported — each coder assessed in their own context

Assessments & Timed Tests

Structured assessments that go beyond pass/fail

CoderCoach assessments produce a CoderCoach Knowledge Polygon™ for each coder - a dimensional performance profile across the full competency framework, not just a single score. Timed assessment formats add a speed component, making practice conditions closer to real-world coding demands.

  • Standard and timed assessment formats
  • Results produce a Knowledge Polygon™ profile - not just a percentage
  • Weekly Quickfire timed assessments with ranked leaderboard
  • Scores feed directly into IEPs and trend reporting
  • Managers assign assessments with custom deadlines
  • Performance history retained for trend analysis
Performance Trends & Reporting

Measurable improvement - month over month

The Trends view tracks every coder's overall score across months, with percentage change clearly shown alongside the team average. Managers have the data to demonstrate measurable workforce improvement - in a format that makes sense outside of HIM.

  • Month-over-month score change for every team member
  • Team average benchmarked alongside individuals
  • Trend direction and rate of change clearly surfaced
  • Supports performance reviews and governance reporting
  • Identifies coders improving quickly - and those needing additional support

Built specifically for Canada - by Canadian Coding experts

Generic coding tools use ICD-10-CM (US) or ICD-10 WHO. CoderCoach is built on ICD-10-CA - Canada's classification, with Canadian enhancements and Canadian coding rules that exist nowhere else.

Canadian-Specific Codes

ICD-10-CA has 5th and 6th character enhancements that do not exist in ICD-10-CM or ICD-10 WHO. These are Canadian-only codes for Canadian clinical scenarios.

CCI - Not CPT or ICD-10-PCS

Canadian procedures are coded in CCI - a completely different classification from US CPT or ICD-10-PCS. No US-origin coding tool supports CCI.

DAD & NACRS Databases

Canadian abstracting rules for DAD (inpatient) and NACRS (ambulatory) differ from US rules. CoderCoach is built around these databases.

Provincial Variation Aware

Each province has different coder types and database combinations. CoderCoach captures province and coder role, adapting assessments and scoring to match.
